My Story

로얄 마일을 뒤덮은 관광객들… 과연 이들이 어디에서 갑자기 나타났는지 궁금할 따름입니다.

설마 이 많은 사람이 전부 타투를 보러갈 관광객으로 미처 생각지 못하고 나를 저지하는 경관에게 나 표 있다고 한마디 하니 경관 왈 … 여기 있는 모든 사람이 표를 가지고 있다고 한다… 설마 그 조그마한 에든버러 성 앞 광장에 이 많은 인파를 수용할 공간이 되는지 의심스러웠다.

필스너 우르켈은 이를 생산하는 필젠(Pilzen) 지방에서 그 이름을 따왔습니다.
“Pilsner, Pilsen, Pilzen, Pils라는 단어를 사용하는 맥주는 모두 이 지방의 이름을 이용하는 것이지요.”
그렇다면 왜 저마다 필스너라는 말을 사용할까요?
그 이유는 현재 우리가 마시는 담색의 황금빛 맥주의 고향이 바로 필젠지방이기 때문입니다.
과거 보헤미아는 수도원에서만 양조할 수 있던 맥주를 일반인도 양조할 수 있도록 교황의 허락을 받았습니다.

“당연히 수 많은 맥주가 양조되었으며, 독일의 여타 지방에 비해 경도가 낮은 물을 사용하던 보헤미안은 저온에서의 오랜 숙성 끝에 황금빛 투명한 맥주를 만들어낸 것이지요.”
에일과 흑맥주 일색이던 당시의 맥주에 비해 은은한 호프의 향이 깊숙이 배어든 이 맥주는 폭발적인 호응을 얻었습니다. 1842년 최초로 생산된 이 맥주는 1870년에 이르러 유럽횡단 열차를 통해 독일제국 전역에서 판매가 이루어졌다하니 그 인기를 짐작할 수 있습니다.
필스너 우르켈의 우르켈(Urquell)은 오리지널(Original)이란 뜻입니다.

“유럽인들의 신대륙 이동과 함께 유럽의 다른 맥주사들이 앞다투어 보헤미안 스타일의 맥주를 모방했으며, 브랜드 이름에 필스너를 사용함에 따라 독일법원의 판결에 따라 필스너 우르켈만이 필스너라는 단어의 사용할 수 있게 되었으며, 거기에 오리지널이라는 뜻의 우르켈을 붙인 것입니다.”
유명한 보헤미아의 Saaz 호프를 사용해 진한 홉 향과 강한 쓴맛을 가지는 맥주로서 굉장히 남성적인 맛을 지녔습니다.

세계의 맥주 전문가들이 손꼽아 최고의 맥주로 추천하고 있는 좋은 맥주입니다만 국내의 시음자들이 마시기에는 너무 쓴 맛을 지니고 있습니다.
아무리 좋은 평가를 받고 있는 맥주라도 우리나라에서 인기를 끌기에는 무리가 있는 듯해 보입니다.

뜸금없는 이 사진은 프라하의 연인에 나오는 마리오네뜨가 생각나 체코 프라하 국립인형극단(Link)의 공연중에 찍은 사진을 올려 보았습니다.

프라하의 연인이 종영되었네요. 전에 프라하를 여행한 추억을 더듬어 그곳 사진을 몇장 올려 봅니다. 소원의 벽 (Link)은 전에 구시가 광장에 위치한 틴성당과 함께 올렸었습니다. 그런데 극본상 임시로 만들어진 것이기에 실재는 존재하지 않는 벽입니다. 그곳에 설치 할 때는 훼손 되지 않도록 깨끗이 하였으면서 왜 덕수궁 돌담길은 그렇게 만들어 놓았는지….

이제 겨울인가 봅니다. 아침 일찍 첫눈으로 착각할 정도로 서리때문에 온 동네가 하얗게 변해버렸습니다. 오늘 옥스포드는 하루종일 안개 속에 갇혀 있었습니다. 런던으로 가던 중 언덕위로 올라가면서 안개를 벗어났는데 마치 구름위 산 정상에서 바라보는 듯한 착각을 들게 하네요. 돌아오는 길 4시가 조금 지난 시간, 벌써 어둠은 짓게 깔리고 안개로 한치 앞을 볼 수 없었습니다.
오늘 사진은 잉글랜드와 스코틀랜드 국경을 찍은 사진입니다.
모든 EU 국가가 그러하듯 국경의 개념이 사라진지 오래이고 Economic borders 만이 존재하는 것 같습니다.

Today the visitor to Berwick can be forgiven for believing it to be a Scottish town, as after all it stands on the northern bank of the River Tweed, an entirely Scottish river and it does seem to have a rather Scottish appearance. Berwick is also the name of a large Scottish Burgh and the old county of Berwickshire (of which Berwick was not part !) was in Scotland. Furthermore Berwick, is a little bit more closer to the Scottish capital of Edinburgh, than to the North East’s regional centre of Newcastle upon Tyne.

사실 오래전에는 이 트위드강이 스코틀랜드와 잉글랜드의 국경이었으며 Berwick 은 스코틀랜드의 타운이었습니다.

Not far from The Thinker stands Rodin’s monumental masterpiece, The Gates of Hell, installed in the garden of the Museum in 1937. By a decree of 16 August 1880, Rodin received a commission from the Directorate of Fine Arts for a monumental door which was to be decorated with low reliefs inspired by The Divine Comedy of Dante. This door was intended for the planned Museum of Decorative Arts in Paris to be built on the site of the Cour des Comptes, demolished in 1871 (this site is now occupied by the Musée d’Orsay). The subject was probably suggested by Rodin for it is known that he admired Dante and used to keep a copy of his book in his pocket. He started to work feverishly in a studio specially allocated to him for the purpose at the Dépôt des Marbres in Rue de l’Université. His initial idea was a composition in panels similar to the Door of Paradise in the Baptistery of Florence by Ghiberti (1425-1452). However, he soon changed his mind about dividing the door into sections, preferring the example of Michelangelo’s Last Judgement in the Sistine Chapel. The third maquette (exhibited in room 10) shows that already in 1880 its composition was close to the one finally adopted.

Of all the works by Rodin, the most famous one is unquestionably the great Thinker. It was modelled in 1880-1882 for The Gates of Hell, and exhibited in its original size (H. 71.5 cm) in Copenhagen in 1888. It was enlarged in 1902 and exhibited in this form at the Salon of 1904 where it aroused strong reactions from the press. It was on this occasion that Gabriel Mourey, editor of the magazine Les Arts de la vie, launched a subscription for a bronze “offered to the people of Paris” to erase the affront caused by the refusal of the statue of Balzac in 1898. The Thinker was the first work by Rodin to be erected in a public place. It was inaugurated in front of the Pantheon on 21 April 1906 during an intense political and social crises which turned this sculpture into a socialist symbol. In 1922, using as a pretext that the statue created an obstacle during ceremonies, it was transported, with its pedestal, to the garden of the Hôtel Biron which had by then become the Rodin Museum. Another example was placed over the tomb of Rodin in Meudon.

나폴레옹의 유해가 안치돼 있고 황금 돔이 화려한 파리의 ‘앵발리드’ 가까이에 로댕의 걸작들을 모아놓은 로댕미술관이 있습니다. 미술관 정원 한켠에 있는 유명한 ‘생각하는 사람(Thinker)’을 모든분이 기억하실 겁니다. 물론 그전에 지옥의 문을 자세히 보시면 단테를 묘사한 the thinker 를 먼저 확인하실 수 있습니다.
