스코틀랜드 국경 (Scottish borders)

이제 겨울인가 봅니다. 아침 일찍 첫눈으로 착각할 정도로 서리때문에 온 동네가 하얗게 변해버렸습니다. 오늘 옥스포드는 하루종일 안개 속에 갇혀 있었습니다. 런던으로 가던 중 언덕위로 올라가면서 안개를 벗어났는데 마치 구름위 산 정상에서 바라보는 듯한 착각을 들게 하네요. 돌아오는 길 4시가 조금 지난 시간, 벌써 어둠은 짓게 깔리고 안개로 한치 앞을 볼 수 없었습니다.
오늘 사진은 잉글랜드와 스코틀랜드 국경을 찍은 사진입니다.
모든 EU 국가가 그러하듯 국경의 개념이 사라진지 오래이고 Economic borders 만이 존재하는 것 같습니다.





작은 돌담이 이곳이 국경선이라는 흔적을 알려주네요.

ENGLISH OR SCOTTISH ?

Today the visitor to Berwick can be forgiven for believing it to be a Scottish town, as after all it stands on the northern bank of the River Tweed, an entirely Scottish river and it does seem to have a rather Scottish appearance. Berwick is also the name of a large Scottish Burgh and the old county of Berwickshire (of which Berwick was not part !) was in Scotland. Furthermore Berwick, is a little bit more closer to the Scottish capital of Edinburgh, than to the North East's regional centre of Newcastle upon Tyne.


 
홀리 아일랜드에서 5마일 떨어진 곳, 잉글랜드의 가장 북쪽 타운인 Berwick

사실 오래전에는 이 트위드강이 스코틀랜드와 잉글랜드의 국경이었으며 Berwick 은 스코틀랜드의 타운이었습니다.

Holy Island 주변 풍경들...

Originally called Lindisfarne after the stream which runs into the salt marshes, St Aidan calls the Island ‘Holy’ in his prayer. During the 11th century, in honour of the saints and monks who lived here, the Island became known more frequently as Holy Island. The legacy of its saints still makes it a very special place.


곧 바닷길이 잠기기에 관광객들이 서둘러 돌아가고 있습니다. 그래서 성까지 가보지 못하고 발길을 돌려야 했습니다.

홀리아일랜드 (Holy Island) 로 가는 길

Holy Island lies a few miles South of the Scottish border, just off the Northumberland coast which is one of the most beautiful areas of England. It is home to about 160 residents and welcomes upwards of 500,000 visitors each year.

It is linked to the mainland by a causeway which is covered twice a day by the sea for about 5 hours at a time. It is this feature of intermittent 'island hood' which provides a unique lifestyle for residents and an attractive and meaningful experience for visitors.


우리나라에서 제부도처럼 바닷길이 열리듯 이곳 영국에도 그런 곳이 있어 찾아가 보았습니다.

Bamburgh Castle

Towering above the tiny village of Bamburgh on the bare, sandy coastline of Northumberland, the massive walls of this medieval fortress are one of two such places believed to be the original site of Lancelot's castle of Joyous Garde. Interestingly, there was a Dark-Age stronghold on the same site, which may account for this tradition.

In 547 it became the capital of the Northumbrian 'Kingdom' of the Angles who had settled there in the early part of the sixth century; as such, it would have been a stronghold of the Saxon alliance, who were Arthur's prime enemies in his fight to maintain British rule. At the time, the site was not called Bamburgh, but seems to have been named 'Din Guayrdi', which may have suggested Joyous Garde to Sir Thomas Malory, who first described it as Lancelot's holding in his fifteenth-century Arthurian 'novel', Le Morte d'Arthur.


Seahouses 에서 Bamburgh 카슬까지 넓게 펼쳐진 비치를 걸어가면서.... 그런데 한여름인데도 이런 아름다운 비치에 추운 바람때문에 파카를 걸쳐야 하는 이몸


바닷가로 조금 더 걸어가는 수고를 하였더라면 이런 사진도 찍어 볼 수 있겠지만 이 넓은 곳을 걸어 다니기에는 너무 힘에 벅차네요. 출처 - www.bamburghcastle.com

Seahouses

Situated on the north Northumberland coast and designated an area of outstanding natural beauty, (AONB), Seahouses is the ideal base from which to explore this magnificent part of England.


모래사장 위로 날리는 작은 모래알... 사진은 정지화상이라는 점이 좀 아쉽네요...
아마 1년 넘게 영국에서 도로변에 불법으로(위사진처럼 잔디밭 위에) 차를 세우고 놀러 다닌 것은 처음입니다.
Parafoil Kites 패러포일 카이트를 날리는 많은 사람을 보았습니다. 나중에 사진을 올리겠지만 바닷가에서 주로 패러포일 카이트로 서핑을 즐기는 장면도 자주 볼 수 있습니다.

Farne Islands

The Farne Islands lie in the very north-east of England, just off the Northumberland coast midway between the fishing village of Seahouses and the ancient Northumbrian capital of Bamburgh. They are located at the most easterly point of the 'Great Whin Sill' which begins in Cumberland some 80 miles distant and gives a distinct and spectacular character to the North Northumbrian coastline. Comprising between 15 and 28 islands the number to be seen depend very much upon the state of the tide and consisting solely of bare igneous rock.
